The Mummy is the latest reboot in the Hollywood circuit in an attempt to remake something that didn't need remade as the first ones were perfectly fine. This movie was directed by Alex Kurtzman and stars Tom Cruise, Russell Crow, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis and Sophia Boutella. I enjoyed the previous Mummy movies, quite a bit. Now, those movies were by no means terrific and to be honest they were pretty dumb but they are great guilty pleasure movies. I can remember watching Brendan Fraiser battling evil forces for the first time on TV as a kid. I love those films, so when this one was coming out, I am going to be honest... I was a little biased already. However, I decided to take a deep breath and give The Mummy a strong chance.
It was the most mediocre thing I have ever sat through.
Let's take a look at the positives:
1. Fun- There were some really fun and really awesome scenes and I had a good time with them. Tom Cruise came in and did what he did best and made some really big and really believable action sequences. He throws himself all around the movie and I could tell he wanted to make a successful and entertaining film! The scenes he was in were just that! It was when he wasn't on frame the movie lost all forward motion and felt like it literally just stopped. Look for those big Tom Cruise moments.
2. Sophia Boutella- Having to play a villain is never an easy task. In fact, for me it is the quickest thing to ruin a movie (next to shaky cam of course.) I never felt like there was a moment when she was off or not attempting to bring everything she had to the film. Sophia like her co-star, Cruise, gave everything she had to this film and it paid off in a big way for her!
Now, let's look at the negatives:
1. Jake Johnson- I love Jake, he's a funny dude. He's a guy I really want to see succeed in the industry and one of my favorite comedic actors. He felt unbelievably out of place in this movie. He is talented and I think he's a really good actor. He just didn't belong here. I could tell during the action sequence he is featured in at the beginning, he was out of place. It was almost like he was uncomfortable. He also just shows up at the worst times to deliver unfunny dialogue. Most of it comes down to writing though.
2. Annabelle Wallis- I could not stand her character. She was incredibly needy and incredibly boring. It was a really one-dimensional and really flat performance and a true "damsel in distress" role. I have nothing against the actress, this one was all the writing.
3. Story- Another writing negative! Starting to see a trend? This movie had a boring and bland story. I knew nothing about any character and honestly I didn't really care to after the extremely jumbled first act. Nothing felt tied together, it jumped all over the place and just felt like there was no real end goal. I left the theater feeling as though nothing had been accomplished. It was all setting up an unnecessary sequel.
Overall I thought The Mummy was pretty bland and gave us just two really good things. Fun action with Tom Cruise and a cool villain in Sophia Boutella. The rest of the movie was bland and headed nowhere fast. If you want to watch The Mummy, I recommend waiting until it is on TV one Sunday afternoon. I am going to give The Mummy a C-.
