Official Review:
Spenser Confidential is the most recent Netflix film directed by Peter Berg and is the 5th collaboration between Berg and Mark Wahlberg. Spenser Confidential follows the life of, Spenser, a former Boston police officer hell-bent on solving the murder of two of his former colleagues. Spenser Confidential opens up much like any other film of this caliber would. With a voiceover, flashback and grey color grading. This mediocre intro was followed up by a mediocre movie. Spenser Confidential in its essence was extremely underwhelming, which was a large disappointment as Peter Berg is the mastermind behind wonderful movies like Lone Survivor, Patriot's Day and Deepwater Horizon. Labeled as a comedy, mystery, thriller Spenser Confidential fails to deliver in any of those genres.
Throughout the 110 minute runtime, Spenser Confidential struggled to move the needle past "average." This was largely in part to a lackluster story that was filled to the brim with tonal inconsistencies. Very rarely do I have any issue with music in a film, however, I feel this was the one place Berg's direction truly missed the mark. It's score screamed "drama" while it's dialogue and story screamed buddy cop movie. It was this vast and jarring tonal inconsistency that sunk any momentum this movie had. I rarely struggle to know what genre a movie wants to be, but I found myself looking up exactly what type of movie Spenser Confidential was. Aside from the miss-conveyed tone, Spenser Confidential had a weak storyline from beginning to end. I never found myself engaged with what I was watching. I didn't care for any of the characters, didn't laugh at any of the jokes and even at times guessed exactly what was going to happen in the next scene. Spenser Confidential lacked originality and is a movie that will disappear just as quickly as you watch it.
The action is Spenser Confidential was enjoyable, it wasn't John Wick standards by any means but it was fun. Some scenes were better than others and it definitely had room for improvement. I will say, the one thing I did enjoy from Spenser Confidential was the performances of both Mark Wahlberg and Iliza Shlesinger. Both of these actors brought it- especially the work of Iliza Shlesinger. This was the first performance I have seen of hers, while I am familiar with her stand-up comedy, I was pleasantly surprised with her. I am definitely looking forward to her next performance.
If I were to sum Spenser Confidential up in one word, it'd simply be underwhelming. My expectations were high for this movie and it failed to deliver on all fronts. If you are looking for a good way to kill a few hours, I think Spenser Confidential is a good way to zone out for a few hours but it dissipates the moment you're finished watching it. I am going to give Spenser Confidential a C.
