Official Synopsis: Three years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park, Owen Grady and Claire Dearing return to the island of Isla Nublar to save the remaining dinosaurs from a volcano that's about to erupt. They soon encounter terrifying new breeds of gigantic dinosaurs, while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the entire planet.
Official Review: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the direct sequel to 2015's Jurassic World. To be honest I had virtually no excitement when this movie was announced and it stayed that way up until the release date. I went into Fallen Kingdom with low expectations and none of them were exceeded. The entire run time of this film I just kept waiting for this movie to get more exciting. I was not a fan of the first Jurassic World, finding it to be pretty sub-par and generic. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom didn't prove to be any better. After taking sometime to really think about why this movie failed to exceed expectations I have settled on the thought that it is just bland.
The first Jurassic Park was one of the best films of it's era, possibly one of the best of all time. The reason for this was it's strong and memorable characters. Jurassic World didn't have any memorable characters, everyone in this film was forgettable at best. The villain felt underused and simple while our heroes were generic and unimpressive. A large part of this is due to it's extremely poor writing. At times I heard the things they were saying on screen and just shook my head at the cheesy and predictable dialogue. I do have to give credit to the actors of this movie because they did the best they could with what they had, which wasn't much.
The real problem I had with Jurassic World was it's story and it's direction. While the story was passable at times, it was very quick to abandon decisions and quick to switch it's tone. Jurassic World had entertaining moments especially in some of the more tense moments. J.A Bayona understands how to craft a thrilling scene but unfortunately, after every single tense scene it was ruined by a useless jump scare or a mess of CGI happening off screen. Part of the magic of the first movie was the limited views of the dinosaurs. As the audience we got to spend time with the characters learning about them and experiencing everything with them. We were scared and surprised when we saw the dinosaurs on screen, they frightened us the same way they frightened the characters.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom felt unnecessary and didn't do much to further the world of the established Jurassic Park franchise. It felt like a hollowed out shadow of the original film and trilogy. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a sequel that never should've happened. While all movies are luxuries that we get to experience it was sad to see such a loved movie be stretched into what it has become.
However, I was thankful for the score of this film. Michael Giacchino has proven to be one of my favorite film composers and Fallen Kingdom was further proof that he is a very talented musician. The CGI of this film was nothing to cry home about as it felt standard and expected. As for the cinematography, there were some shots I did love but for the most part it was generic and by the book.
I did enjoy parts of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom but for the most part it just felt generic, which is never a good sign. I would recommend waiting to rent Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom when it releases on Blu-Ray and DVD.
