Kingsman: The Golden Circle was directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Taron Edgerton reprising his role as Kingsman agent Eggsy. Now, I was a huge fan of the first Kingsman. It was easily one of my favorite films of 2014 and Matthew Vaughn is my favorite working director to date. So, it's safe to say I had really high expectations for The Golden Circle. In a way, a lot of them were met. However, this movie was not the sequel I was expecting. That does not make it bad though. Kingsman: The Golden Circle was a pretty fun and enjoyable movie and one that I really had a great time with. Kingsman: The Golden Circle was not as good as the first one and it did have some problems. I had to take off my Matthew Vaughn "fan-boy" hat and really take a look at this movie critically.
So let's jump in and see what worked.
1. Action- Matthew Vaughn did it again with a truly fun and exciting movie. The action sequences in this film were just a blast to watch. Visually they were coherent and each one had a different tone. I felt invested in the fight scenes and that was refreshing. Vaughn does something really interesting to me with his actions scenes, he will use movement in ways I haven't really seen before. It's really visually stimulating and keeps your attention on what is already really exciting action. Vaughn's unorthodox style can be a little hard to adjust to at first, but once you buy in it becomes some of the best action I have seen in a while.
2. Comedy- This movie was actually pretty funny, it was over the top and I appreciated that. The Kingsman franchise is supposed to be over the top and make fun of the spy genre. The Golden Circle did this really well. It had one of the greatest cameo's I have ever seen. It was nice to see Matthew Vaughn have fun with making this movie and the actors do so as well. Even some of the action was funny. The comedy worked extremely well and it felt pretty natural.
3. Style- The first Kingsman was a pretty stylistic movie. The Golden Circle took it one step farther. This movie dove deep into the world that Matthew Vaughn created. There were new gadgets, weapons and characters. It was creative and clever. I really fell in love with the unique visuals of this movie and to watch the characters interact with each other. It felt almost cartoon like at times.
Now this movie does have some issues.
1. Pacing- This movie was very long. It was around two and a half hours long and to be honest a lot could've been cut out. The second act of this movie was a little too slow for me. It focused a lot on subplots more than it should have. It sometimes felt like they didn't know how to transition from scene to scene. I think this is due to a lack of urgency from any characters really. There was really no sense of urgency throughout the entire film. We'll get into that later.
2. Too bloated- This movie was filled with too many characters and subplots. It never really let me settle with the overarching plot. This was sad because Julian Moore was an amazing villain. I really enjoyed the scenes with her and I thought she was a great addition to the film. Unfortunately, we never settled in with the villain of the movie. This lead to me not having any real emotional ties to what was going to happen. It also allowed for a deflated ending. It didn't feel resolved because I never felt any major urgency.
Overall, I had a pretty good time with Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I thought it was really well directed and acted. It was some of the most exciting action I have seen in a while. Vaughn did an excellent job of creating a unique and fun action movie. Unfortunately, the pacing of this movie was just too inconsistent. It's inability to juggle characters and plots also created a story that was hard to really care about. This wouldn't have been a major issue if the first one hadn't been as good as it was. I am going to give Kingsman: The Golden Circle a B-.
