Wish Upon is the latest movie by John R. Leonetti, and stars Joey King as Claire, a teenage girl who is fairly shy and reserved. One day Claire's father (Ryan Phillipe) brings her a Chinese music box, that also serves as an ancient wishing box. The box gives the user seven wishes, but each time a wish is used a blood price must be paid.
I saw this movie at 4:50 on a Tuesday by myself and was the only one in the theater. I was thankful for this situation, because it gave me the opportunity to audible sigh whenever something dumb happened. Which was a lot. Now, typically I always want to give movies a fair chance. I never like to fully tear a movie down. I really like to give credit where it's due, because I understand that people work very hard to make a movie. That being said I struggle to give credit to Wish Upon.
There is an unspoken rule in Hollywood that every January we get a super dumb horror movie that is just painfully bad. This movie belonged in that spot.
This movie has one good quality... kind of. :
1. Joey King- Joey King is an actress I took note of when she did The Conjuring and Family Weekend. She was surprisingly talented and I was excited to see what she'd do next. Since then, she's kind of fell flat and hasn't had a true stand out performance. This was definitely her most bland and unimpressive performance, however, she was definitely the best in the movie by far.
There was a lot that didn't work in this movie:
1. The Story- So, this is a a story that just made no sense at times. Most of it just kind of happened and had no real transition from act to act. At times it didn't even feel like it was a horror movie any more. It just felt like a weird teen movie. It had this abnormally long shopping sequence that just felt really awkward. When there was any form of horror, it was really drawn out and awkward. It just didn't make sense. There were times the characters themselves asked specific dialogue questions that contradicted the story we were watching.
2. The Scares- This movie had really underwhelming tension and horror. It felt like a poor imitation of the Final Destination. It just was filled with mindless and unneeded elaborate gore that felt cheap. It was just sad.
3. The Acting-I mentioned up above that Joey King did the best during the movie. The rest of this cast was just bad. It was filled with forced dialogue, awkward fake crying and just too much heavy breathing.
4. Too Cliche- This movie was far too cliche. It was almost annoying how predictable this movie was. Especially the ending. There were way too dream sequences that were annoying. I was ready to pull my hair out at the end of this one because everything was just too easy. Also, I hate the google search cliche. It is just annoying. This whole movie was just annoying.
Overall, Wish Upon fell flat for me on several occasions. It was just a cheap and disposable "horror" film. If you are wanting to go see this movie, I really recommend waiting til it comes out for rental, pick it up and watch it with a group of friends. That's really the only way this movie will be any fun. I am going to give Wish Upon an F.
